Job Summary:
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the senior-most leader in charge of developing and overseeing the execution of the organization’s strategy, operations, and financial performance in accordance with NCGS § 143-728 and the organization’s governing documents. The CEO provides strategic leadership by working with the Board, external partners, government constituencies, and other stakeholders to establish long-range goals, strategies, plans, and policies; develops, engages, and maintains a network of academic and industry partners; and leads a cross- functional, multi-disciplinary executive team that supports statewide applied research innovation commercialization across the University of North Carolina System.
Responsibilities:
The President & Chief Executive Officer will be responsible for the following:
Strategic Direction & Implementation
- Collaborates with Board to develop and execute the organization’s strategic vision, to include long-range goals, objectives, and related plans and policies
- Sets and monitors Key Performance Indicators and maintains balanced score card or similar performance monitoring system
- Provides regular reports to the Board regarding the status of strategic objectives, organizational operations, and financial performance
- Advises and evaluates the impact of strategies, programs, and economic development initiatives
Financial Management & Compliance
- Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and resource allocation to ensure fiscal health and sustainability
- Maintains overall responsibility for the organization’s fiscal integrity; promotes a culture of transparency and financial accountability
- Ensures compliance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, internal controls, and governance standards
- Develops and implements funding strategies to support the organization’s continued growth; leads fundraising activities across public and private sectors
Executive Leadership
- Assesses organizational capacity to implement strategy; identifies and addresses gaps in personnel, process, and technology/other resources to position organization for success
- Leads a high-performing executive team and subordinate employees; promotes communication across the organization
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, inclusion, and continuous improvement, maintaining a results-oriented work environment that instills confidence, generates pride, and respects individuals
- Supervises Chief Innovation Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Communications Officer, and General Counsel/Chief Risk, Ethics, & Compliance Officer, and other executives and employees as needed
Stakeholder Engagement
- Serves as the organization’s principal representative to the Board of Directors, financial partners, elected and other government officials, university leaders, and public/private sector stakeholders
- Develops regional, national, and international partnerships with the private, academic, and public sectors
- Catalyzes strong linkages between the private sector, industry partners, and applied research universities across North Carolina
- Enhances the organization’s value to constituents by building on proven relationships, growing and leveraging investments and programs, exploring new initiatives, and establishing new partnerships
- Promotes and facilitates transdisciplinary research, innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization
- Enhances visibility and public awareness of organizational initiatives

Qualifications:
The President & CEO should possess the following qualifications:
- Bachelors degree required; advanced degree in finance, management, or administration strongly preferred
- Experience in some combination of higher education, university, non-profit, and/or entrepreneurial organizations required
- Minimum of 20 years of progressively senior leadership experience leading high- performance organizations, preferably in some combination of higher education, university, non-profit, and/or entrepreneurial environments
- Experience working with high-profile Board members and external stakeholders, to include philanthropic fundraising
- Proven ability to conceive and execute strategies; build and lead high-performing, cross-functional teams; and achieve measurable organizational objectives while complying with applicable laws, professional and regulatory standards, and governance structures
- Expert written and verbal communication skills; strong decision making; and a proactive attention to detail
- Ability to manage a team and resources within budget
- Expert proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
